Three ACU students in the Department of Art and Design were chosen for awards in the Intercollegiate Student Art Competition 2023. The exhibit is held annually at The Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene. Junior art major Alyanna Bayliss won Best of Show for her sculpture titled “Fish Out of Water.” Senior graphic design/advertising major Haley Warmsley was awarded first place for her sculpture titled “Little Black Girl.” Junior art education major Kaci (Creel) McKean received an honorable mention for her sculpture titled “Composition #3.” The student exhibit is open to ACU, Cisco College, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Texas State Technical College, Angelo State, Howard Payne, Midwestern State, South Plains College and Tarleton State.

Professor Kelly Mann Receives Blessings and Support from Students

Kelly (Kercheval ’09) Mann, assistant professor of interior architecture and design, is known for her fun attitude and adventurous spirit. When students found out about her breast cancer diagnosis in Summer 2023, they enlisted the president and leadership of ACU’s student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and began organizing a unique Chapel service for her. Ryan Feerer (’05), professor and director of the graphic design program, designed a T-shirt to honor Kelly and raise money for her and her family. The shirts were secretly distributed and worn as a surprise to Kelly’s Chapel service. Prayers were lifted to God, and a generous donation to the Mann family was conveyed from all students and faculty who love Kelly.

Homecoming Exhibition Highlights Leese’s Paintings

A&D’s Shore Gallery Homecoming Exhibition this fall will feature the work of alumna Alice Leese (‘86). The exhibition, entitled “National Parks Arts Foundation Residency Paintings,” will include plein air paintings that Leese completed during four National Parks Artist Residencies. Two of those residencies – at Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – brought Leese to starkly different natural environments than the desert plains of West Texas where she ranches. Leese’s work recently appeared in a solo show at Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa, Texas, and she was also chronicled on the popular Texas Country Reporter television series. Put her exhibition on your calendar: Oct. 4-Nov. 1, with a reception during Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 19, 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m.

Mike Wiggins Co-Produces Documentary on Creativity

Mike Wiggins (’93), in collaboration with Kyle Dickson (’92) and the ACU Learning Studio, has recently unveiled the documentary, "Assembly Required: Building the Creative Team." Co-produced and directed by Mike and Kyle, with filming and editing by Nathan Driskell (’07) and Matt Maxwell (’08), the film offers a thoughtful exploration of creativity and collaboration across entertainment, technology and design. Featuring insights from luminaries like Ed Catmull (Pixar), Shona Brown (Google) and William Joyce (filmmaker, author), as well as ACU alums Nelson Coates (‘84), Leah (Green ’12) Rama and Jose Canales (’04), it delves into the challenges and essential characteristics necessary for teams to harness the full power of creativity at work. The documentary has garnered recognition at esteemed film festivals, including the Boston International Film Festival, Dublin World Film Festival and the New Orleans International Film Festival.
