Art & Design Remembers Ginna Sadler

The A&D family is mourning the loss of longtime colleague, mentor and friend Virginia “Ginna” Sadler, who passed away March 12. Ginna began teaching part time at ACU in 1980 and taught full time from 1990 to 2016, when she retired. She was the department’s resident jeweler and metalsmith as well as its in-house comedienne. Her talents, wit, wisdom and care blessed the lives of countless students – many of whom she supported not only with words of encouragement but by also purchasing their artwork. She will be dearly missed, and her legacy continues to influence our department.

We are starting a fine art scholarship fund in honor of Ginna. This will be designated specifically for students studying painting, sculpture, art education or art therapy. If you have been touched by her influence (or perhaps if you didn’t know her but value the fine art experience you had in our program), we hope you will consider contributing to the fund.

ACU and Baylor Students Cast Iron

Students Ryan Patterson, Avery Silliman, Savannah Walker and Macey Schubert accompanied associate professor of art Geoffrey Broderick to an iron-pouring event in November in Waco, Texas, where they teamed up with Baylor professor of art Robbie Barber and his students to cast molds in iron. The castings were finished out and colored for individual class projects for Fall 2022.

Graphic Design Students Visit San Francisco

In mid-March, our department took a group of young graphic designers to San Francisco during spring break. We toured six design firms and tech companies including Google, 8VC, Manual and Hybrid Design. Brent Couchman (’05) also gave a wonderful presentation on his journey from Texas to San Francisco and how he started his Moniker design studio, and he provided the students with a treat later that day hosting our group at his house. We are thankful for the relationships we’ve been able to build with our alumni, and in particular, we’re thankful for Brent for facilitating those visits.

London’s National Portrait Gallery Unveils Rebrand With New Typeface

Jordan Bell (’13), a Monotype type designer, recently collaborated with the National Portrait Gallery in London to design a new typeface as part of the museum's rebranding effort. The National Portrait Gallery is a world-renowned institution that houses an extensive collection of portraits of historical significance. Jordan’s typeface played a critical role in modernizing the museum’s visual identity while preserving its relevance in today’s art world. We are excited to see our alumni making significant contributions to the design industry!

Alumna Joins Interior Design Faculty as Adjunct

The Department of Art and Design and the interior design program welcome Mariel Delgado (’19) as adjunct faculty. Mariel is originally from Denton, Texas, and earned a degree in interior design. She completed her CIDQ requirements in 2021 and expects to complete a master’s in architecture in 2024. Mariel is a welcome addition to our team and has expertise and enthusiasm in her classes.
