ACU Art & Design: Issue No. 22

Canales Speaks at National Conference

The Brand New Conference focuses on the practice of brand identity design and features 20 speakers from all over the world. José Canales (’04), founder and creative director of Canales & Co, presented a case study of his rebranding for the city of Sunset Valley. Canales has more than 18 years of experience and has worked with many significant brands, including Yeti, Whole Foods and Costa. Canales & Co. is located in Austin, Texas, and employs three ACU alumni.

Lee-Rossen Shapes Memorable Experiences for Guests at the Nasher

After receiving an M.A. in art history, Isabel Lee-Rosson (’15) has worked in multiple arenas of the museum and gallery world, from overseeing collections at the University of North Texas to managing publicity and openings for the Talley Dunn Gallery in Dallas. Her latest adventure is serving as manager of visitor experience for the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. “I work with a wonderful team of eight people to act as concierge for the museum, sell tickets and memberships, and give in-depth tours of the building and exhibitions,” she said. “I love to meet people from all over the world, but my favorite visitors are college art students and architects that come to see the building. I am so thankful that I work with so many amazing people throughout our different departments, meet exhibiting artists and share my passion for art and art history with our guests.”

Uptick in Enrollment Spurs Program Name Change

The Interior Design program has seen consistent and projected growth over the last several years, leading to the discussion of a programmatic name change. ACU’s Office of Admissions has also seen an increase in prospective students interested in architecture who want a full four-year degree. Because of the similarities in the content and significant course overlap of the AA in Architecture and the BS in Interior Design, the faculty has voted to change the name of the program to a BS in Interior Architecture and Design. With this change, the department hopes to lock in prospective students who don’t truly understand the full extent of the profession of interior design. This shift to Interior Architecture and Design nomenclature is in line with other programs across the country. “We are thrilled with the growth we are seeing in the program and what this name change will do to increase that growth moving forward,” said Kelly Mann, assistant professor of interior design. “Our program is doing great things, and we are on the verge of more amazing things to come.”

Shore Gallery has a New Look

One of many highlights from our recent A+D Homecoming celebration was a mural painted by alumna Chera Chaney Brooker (’16). She arrived on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the Homecoming weekend to get the project started. For the next three days, she painted in front of hundreds of curious and admiring students, faculty and Homecoming guests. Chaney Brooker’s mural can be found on the west side of the Shore Gallery in the A+D courtyard. It has become a regular tour stop for prospective students and their families, sponsored by ACU’s Office of Admissions. Chaney Brooker is a full time muralist, and we were honored to have her return to campus to share her work with the department.

Grommet Opens Nashville-Based Design Firm

After working for several years in the Nashville market with other interior design teams, Carli (Scheevel ’17) Grommet took the leap of faith to step out on her own and start CG Studio. “The scariest part of going off on my own was absolutely the financial aspect, because it would all be up to me instead of having a steady salary,” she said. “A month and a half into owning and operating CG Studio, I am happy to say that I would not change a single thing about my decision.”

Grommet has spent the last five years designing and working on a number of high-end residential projects all around the Nashville area. The outpouring of support from current and past clients is a testament to how much pride she takes in her design work. Find CG Interiors on Instagram @CGStudioInteriors.

Generous Donor to Match Study Abroad Scholarship Goal

You may not know this, but ACU Art and Design is the university’s only department requiring all students to participate in the Study Abroad program. They will learn about significant art and architecture within their cultural context, resulting in a more profound understanding and appreciation. Students will capture the beauty and emotion of their environment through plein air painting and photography.

To help support students who would not otherwise be able to travel, a generous donor has made a lead gift to create an Art & Design Study Abroad Scholarship. These funds will be matched with support raised from your donations and will double our $25,000 goal and support multiple students each year. With a gift today, you can help give our students these life-changing experiences.
