ACU Art & Design: Issue No. 20

Feerer Designs USPS Postage Stamps

On July 23, the U.S. Postal Service released a new set of Forever Stamps designed by Ryan Feerer (’05), ACU graphic design program director, and associate professor of design and artist-in-residence. Feerer illustrated four stamps based on the theme of “Western Wear.” The designs include a boot, a pearl snap shirt, a belt buckle and a cowboy hat. The stamps are available for purchase at your local post office or online at usps.com.

Art and Design Faculty Exhibition

After a short hiatus due to COVID-19, the Biennial Art and Design Faculty Exhibition returned this year, running Oct. 15-26. Faculty exhibited a variety of works created during the pandemic, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, graphic designs and more.

Master Workshop Series: Design Symposium

Brent Couchman (’05), founder of Moniker SF, joined Caroline Bagley, Mackenzie Brookshire, Jesse Reed and Tina Hardison for a virtual workshop as part of the department’s Identity and Brand II class. The panel discussed different career paths in graphic design and what it looks like to work in various professional environments. They also provided students a peek into their design process and gave advice on what studios and agencies are looking for in an entry-level designer and how to land the job of their dreams.

Alumna Produces Children’s Book Series

Tabitha (Youngblood ’09) Schmitt, an artist based in Fort Worth, Texas, is writing and illustrating a series of children’s books entitled Our Little Adventures. Her newest release, Our Little Adventures to the Farmers Market, features foundational language concepts for growing minds and guidance for parents to help their children build their vocabularies.

“I literally never imagined myself illustrating a book and even after I had signed a contract to begin the work, I doubted it was going to work out,” she said. “The work of this book also took place during a very difficult time when my son was young and in and out of the hospital. I look back and can’t figure out how I had the time or the headspace to do this project, but somehow God made it happen right in the middle of a stormy season. This book is an emblem of his faithfulness in the midst of my weakness. I will forever be grateful for this book, the reminder of who God is and how he cares for us in the most unexpected times and places.”

Schmitt documents her growing family’s journey selling their dream home (featured on HGTV’s Homes to Last) and renovating an RV to travel the country on her Instagram @foxhollowstudios, and has a collection of art available on her website.
