Outstanding Alumnus of the Year
The ACU Alumni Advisory Board is pleased to name Cmdr. David Bynum ('84) the university's 2013 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.
Bynum, a native of San Saba, Texas, is a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, which he has served for 18 years. He currently is a student at the National War College in
Washington, D.C., and is slated to be promoted to captain in the coming year. His most recent assignment was in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he served as deputy
command chaplain for U.S. forces there for nearly 11 months.
Before entering the Navy, Bynum ministered to churches in Waco and Hearne and earned Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from ACU. He and his wife,
Elizabeth, have been married 28 years and have two children – Rebekah ('11), now a graduate student at Wesleyan University, and Micah, an ACU freshman.

Young Alumnus of the Year
The Alumni Advisory Board is pleased to name Dr. A. Marcus Nelson ('94) the university's 2013 Young Alumnus of the Year.
Nelson is superintendent of the Laredo Independent School District, which serves more than 25,000 students on 32 campuses in South Texas. Over the course of his career, Nelson has served as a teacher in elementary and high school and an administrator in middle and high school. Before moving to Laredo, Nelson was chief academic officer and second-in-command at the Judson Independent School District, near San Antonio.
In 2011, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) awarded Nelson with the Tejano Achiever Award for his extraordinary community service. A graduate of ACU's Department of Teacher Education, he was given that program's Grover C. Morlan Award in 2009 as an alumnus who has made "significant contributions" in the field of education.

The ACU Alumni Advisory Board each year selects a handful of distinguished alumni to whom honor is due. The Distinguished Alumni Citation recognizes those whose personal and professional achievements have merited the honor and praise of peers and colleagues.
